Scotland Sea Angling – Scrabster

I have just started to take up boat sea fishing and have used a charter boat that operates from Scrabster in the north of Scotland to go out to the Pentland Firth for sea fishing trips. There are several charter boats at Scrabster and I tend to fit in with available spaces when a group charter a days fishing on the Stormdrift II. This boat is operated by Davey who looks after everyone who goes out fishing with him. You can learn more about sea fishing trips from Scrabster on his website for Scrabster Sea Fishing.

The latest trip out involved more than just sea fishing, we spent a fair bit of time observing a School of harbour porpoises, which I tried to photograph – unfortunately most of the photos are out of focus due to the low light conditions at the time. We also got really close up to a large sunfish, which amazingly is the largest fish species – it can weight up to a ton, this one was a bit smaller than that. It was amazing to see and davey obviously loves wildlife as we did three careful trips pass the sunfish to look at it.

The picture is not as clear as I would like however the boat (and the sunfish) was moving about a bit!
Of course when when you are out fishing you usually aim to catch some fish, my prize catch for the trip was a Cuckoo Wrasse which weighed around 2.6 Ibs – the current Scottish record is 3 Ibs so that means there is bigger fish out from Scrabster just waiting to get caught! The Cuckoo Wrasse was weighed and then carefully put back into the sea to grow bigger. The fish is not used for cooking.

When you are out fishing I do like catching fish to take home and use in the kitchen, and on this trip we caught plenty of mackerel which was made into a delicious potted mackerel – with the amount of butter it was not for people on diets, we also caught cod, ling, dabs and plaice – all ended up in the freezer.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of sea boat charter is that you get to go fishing, see wildlife and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
